Course Description

Covers basic financial concepts and practices to explore the principles of planning, acquiring, and using funds in a business. Includes assessing risk and returns, forecasting and planning, working capital management, capital budgeting, financial analysis, cost of capital, and raising funds for new business ventures, small businesses, and corporations. Audit available. Recommended prerequisite: MTH 60. Audit available.

Addendum to Course Description

Finance Management is designed to expose the student to the financial issues of determining the monetary resources needed by a business, the mix of these resources, the sources and uses of funds, the benefits, risks and costs associated with different types of resources and financing. Students will complete a professional quality financial analysis and report, including ratio analysis, industry research and conclusion.

Intended Outcomes for the course

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the function of financial management and how financial principles can help to maximize shareholder value.
  2. Use forecasts to calculate future assets and cash flow needs.
  3. Describe the principles of an effective working capital management program.
  4. Assess the various sources of funds for a business including financing.
  5. Evaluate capital investments, considering the time value of money and risk.
  6. Research and present a financial analysis report demonstrating effective communication and decision making.
     

Outcome Assessment Strategies

Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of the concepts described in the required competencies by any combination of the following:

  1. Attendance and participation in class activities
  2. Portfolio of completed and corrected homework problems, quizzes and tests.
  3. Presentations
  4. Individual or group projects
  5. Completion of a financial analysis report

  6. Written assignments

At the beginning of the course, the instructor will detail the methods used to evaluate student progress and the criteria for assigning a course grade.
